
Celebrate MLK Day through Music, Art, and Theater
Monday, January 20 is the official holiday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This is a special time for people from all walks of life to come together and celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy. Below are a few locations where you can join others in observing the holiday through music, art, and theater.
Through Music
“Beyond the Dream” will be held at the Detroit Historical Museum from 10am-2pm. The program will feature performances by 3d Dance Troupe and the Renaissance High School Choir. On-site workshops will be offered as well. While the event is free, visitors planning to attend are encouraged to register here.

At 7:00pm, The Village Theater in Canton will host a civil rights themed concert featuring award-winning hip hop artist Shaun Boothe. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased from the theater’s website here.
Through Art
On Monday from 11am-3pm, the Detroit Institute of Arts will host gallery talks around its ‘Detroit Collects’ exhibition which displays privately collected artwork created by African American artists such as Charles McGee, Alison Saar, Tylonn Sawyer, and more. General admission to the museum is free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Visit the museum’s website here to learn more.
Through Theater
Head over to Lathrup Village at 12pm to enjoy a free MLK movie followed up by a special program from 2pm-4pm. The program will be taking place in the Lathrup Village Community Room.
